Maritime pine is a broadly distributed conifer in the western Mediterranean Basin, in Southern Europe and Africa, and the Atlantic coast in Portugal, Spain and France. It is a medicinal plant used primarily for its proanthocyanidin content. Proanthocyanidin is a bioflavonoid, which has demonstrated anti-oxidant properties and is taken by some as a treatment for arthritis, bruises, gum disease, phlebitis, ulcers, varicose veins, and other vascular problems. Proanthocyanidins are also considered helpful in improving and preserving the elasticity of skin by stabilizing collagen and elastin. The anti-oxidant properties may be helpful in treating hypoxia from artereosclorosis, inflammation, and cardiac or cerebral infarction.
