Mangosteen is a queen of the fruits with a sweet and sour taste. It is widely cultivated in the Malay and Java Peninsulas, Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina countries, and Sri Lanka. In Thailand, Mangosteen is mostly found in the Eastern and Southern regions. The active ingredients in the fruit hull have an astringent property that can be medically used to cure diarrhea. Mangostins from the fruit hull extract acts as an antibacterial agent and, therefore, is used as an ingredient in anti-ulcer creams. In cosmetics, it is used as a treatment for infected acne. The general cosmetic uses of the Mangosteen extract are as ingredients in facial care, hand sanitizing, soap and shampoo products.

PROPERTIES

1. Antibacterial activity used in anti-acne and acne treatment products.

2. Anti-inflammatory activity used in anti-acne and acne treatment products.

3. Protecting against free radical that causes wrinkles on the skin.

4. Relieving allergy in which a-mangostin protects against histamine and serotonin that

are released from mast cell when the body is exposed to an unidentifiable substance.

5. Protecting the skin from sunlight. Sunscreen products, with 20% of a-mangostin and

the index of SPF=10.4, can protect the skin from sunlight.
