                 Longan is a large tree. The origin is disputed. It may be native to the west of Burma or alongside the lychee in China. It is in these regions that it is planted on a large scale. Longan is a prolific bearer and thrives in monsoonal regions with pronounced rainy and dry seasons. It is by a wide margin Thailand’s greatest fruit export. In research report revealed that the longan seed contain the polyphenol compounds, such as gallic acid, ellagic acid, procyanidin B-2, procyanidin A-type dimers, and so on. These compounds possess the antioxidant activity and able to be absorbed the UV light. Moreover, the present researches revealed that procyanidin B-2 possesses the hair-growing activity. Thus, the extract of longan seed is able to be used in the sunscreen, sunblock, and hair-loss protection products.

Maximum growth-promoting activities relative to controls (=100%) 

Flavonoid compounds were added to the culture during the last 5 day.

             For the control, a medium is an amount of 1/100 volume of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) (for chrisin, genistein, kaempferol, quercetin, hesperetin, taxifolin, phloretin, and cyanidin choride) or water (for procyanidin B-2) was added in place of flavonoid containing solution.

Brackets show optimum concentration.

Results are represented as the mean ± SD (n=6) carried out with primary cultures prepared from 50 neonatal mice.

 

Growth-promoting activities for hair epithelial cells relative to controls (=100%)

For the control, a medium without procyanidins was used.
