Alstonia scholaris si popularly known in Thai as Phayaa- sattaban. This plant is a native of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Africa and China. The plant is a large evergreen tree, growing up to 17-20 m in height, bark is grayish brown, bitter in taste secreting white milky latex. Leaves are 4-7 in a whorl, flowers are small, greenish white. The bark of this tree is used in traditional medicines throughout region to treat malarial fever, immunostimulating, antihypertensive and hepatoprotective effect. The chemical constituents of Phayaasattaban are triterpenoids and indole alkaloids such as akuammiginone, echitamidine-N-oxide 19-O-B-D-glucopyranoside and echitaminic acid.
